USCIS Changes Financial Sponsorship Forms

USCIS released new editions of Forms I-864, I-864A, and I-864EZ. These forms are used to show that a person applying for permanent residence will have sufficient financial support in the United States.

The new forms took effect on August 31, 2026. For filings submitted on or after that date, USCIS requires the edition dated 08/24/26. The previous edition is no longer accepted.

What is the most important change?

The new forms allow USCIS to request information about the sponsor from consumer reporting agencies.

This does not necessarily mean that USCIS will review every sponsor’s credit. USCIS has not established a minimum credit score. However, it may request this information when it considers it necessary to evaluate the sponsor’s financial ability.

If a sponsor has frozen their credit report, they should watch for any notice from USCIS and temporarily lift the freeze if USCIS asks them to do so.

What is each form for?

• Form I-864: The primary form a sponsor uses to promise financial support for the immigrant.
• Form I-864A: Used when another household member contributes income or assets to meet the financial requirements.
• Form I-864EZ: A simplified version that may be used only in certain cases.

What should sponsors do?

Before filing, sponsors should:

• Use the correct edition of the form.
• Make sure all information is complete.
• Include the required proof of income.
• Respond promptly if USCIS requests more information.
• Check whether their credit report is frozen.

Using an outdated edition or leaving information incomplete may cause delays or prevent USCIS from accepting the form.

An important legal commitment

Form I-864 is not simply a statement of good intentions. It is a legally enforceable contract between the sponsor and the United States government.

In certain circumstances, the sponsored immigrant or a government agency may require the sponsor to meet that obligation. Divorce alone does not end the commitment.

For that reason, both the sponsor and the person applying for permanent residence should understand the consequences before signing.
